Durham Master in Business Administration (MBA)
Structure of Programme
Core Modules
The 7 core modules provide a foundation of managerial
knowledge and understanding. The programme starts with a 2-day induction
course designed to tell you more about Durham Business School, the
programme you will be studying and how to gain the most benefits from
teaching and fellow participants.
The 7 subjects are:
- Strategic Management
- Modelling & Analysis for Management
- Managing in the Global Environment
- Managing People
- Managing Finance
- Managing in the Competitive Environment
- Methods of Inquiry
Core modules except Methods of Inquiry are normally assessed by a
case-study based assignment and related examination. MAM (Modelling & Analysis for Management) and Methods of
inquiry are assessed by assignment only.
Electives
In Barbados, we are offering a fixed choice of five subjects with the option to swap one of the five for
another via Distance Learning. Students will be asked during year one to indicate whether they are interested
in doing an elective via Distance Learning.
There are over 20 elective subjects available in Durham. Students may swap up to one elective subject in
Barbados for one in Durham (if it is available as a block module) or one Distance Learning module. No additional
fees will be payable but students will be responsible for their own airfare and accommodation if they visit Durham
and may be charged an administration fee. Anyone interested in this option should discuss it with the Programme
Director during year one. Electives are assessed by assignment only
Dissertation
The programme culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation
on a business topic chosen by you and overseen by a faculty member with
relevant academic/consultancy experience. This is a very rewarding part
of the MBA learning experience, and often a stepping stone to the next
career move.
